How to Decide When to Sell Your Home
E-Mail Me

Young families move to get more space for the children.
Later, "first generation" retirees may want less to take care of, and finally someday
they may need more support and services so they decide to move. Things to
consider when moving because of retirement are:
1. Are you over housed? Are you rattling around in your "empty nest", paying
more than you need to for taxes, utilities and maintaining a larger home? Being on
a fixed income means you should look at if it would be easier to manage your
resources in a lower priced home, town home or condominium.
2. Do you need the equity from your home? Sometimes the equity that's built up
in a home is used for retirement savings. Selling your home is a way to convert
that equity into cash that you can use for your retirement years.
3. Is the home's upkeep manageable? Do you have the time and energy to devote
to caring for the necessary maintenance your home needs? Will the age of your
home mean that major repairs will soon be necessary?
4. Does your home style match your physical abilities? How many floors do you
have to climb? How large is your yard and is it more than you can handle? Do
you need a wheelchair accessible home?
5. What does your neighborhood have to offer you now? If friends, relatives,
doctors, and merchants are not in your immediate area or have moved elsewhere,
then it may be time for you to consider moving also.
6. Would a move improve your quality of life? If you enjoy golfing, then maybe an
address closer to a golf course would be better. If you want to travel then perhaps
a lower maintenance home would be more suited to your lifestyle. You may prefer
to live near old friends, or maybe some place where you can make new friends that
have the same interests as you.
Careful planning and sound, expert advice are crucial to a successful move.
